This study is one in regional geography. It considers a single geographic unit in several phases of its geography. It is an attempt to describe and interpret the economic adjustments man has made to the environmental conditions of the Great Valley in Alabama. It is concerned with the impartial analysis of the conditions of life in the region. In other words, two fundamental problems of economic regional geography present themselves, in so far as the purpose of this study may be stated:

1. How is man using the land and resources of the region, and why does he use them as he does?
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages, the opportunities and handicaps of the region in the utilization of its resources?
